Some
jewelry pieces, like our Charm Bracelets, originally incorporated
the genuine seaglass (a.k.a. beach glass) found along our beaches. However,
we could never hope to find the wide range of shape and color found in
our creations. To supplement the natural supply, Sand . Sea . Sun began recreating the sea glass process. Today, the sea-style glass used in our jewelry is primarily recycled glass, created from broken bottles, stained glass remnants, and beads. This colorful glass is broken, formed and finished in our studios, then tumbled with genuine beach sand, gravel, and salt water to replicate the roll of ocean waves. The resulting sand-etched finish turns these pieces into modern sea jewels, resembling the natural beach glass found along the shore. In
all our jewelry, we use the best "metal" for the job. The chains found
in our necklaces and bracelets are always genuine sterling silver, as are
the tiny accent beads. We like sterling for its natural clear color which
does not "compete" with the brilliant shades of the glass, and any tarnish
that may develop is easily cleaned.
Our
earrings have sterling silver ear wires, in the French shepherd hook style. Other
accent beads and the bar & toggle clasps are of lead-free pewter. This
is a great metal, as it provides a tarnish resistant medium perfect for
intricate detail. It is also non-irritating for those with sensitive skin
and hypo-allergenic requirements.

What
other elements are used?
To
add interest and design, we also use genuine freshwater pearls, semi-precious
stones, and fine European crystals. The pearls and stones may have slight
variations in shape and shading, due to their organic origin. The crystals
are genuine Swarvoski and other European fire-polish varieties, adding
just a touch of sparkle.

Where
is the jewelry made?
All
of our jewelry is entirely American hand made on the Outer Banks of North
Carolina and in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. We have studios in
both locations, where several talented artists create our designs. We take
real pride that our designs are American handmade, and not churned out
by overseas assembly lines. The attention to detail and quality of design

Sand . Sea . Sun ™ & Austin Design ™
are two distinctive American handcrafted jewelry lines. Sand . Sea . Sun is created from natural sea glass, sterling silver, sand etched glass beads, recycled glass, charms with nautical and sea life motifs, and bright crystals. Austin Design is a more contemporary line, incorporating current fashion trends, semi-precious stones, natural pearls, bohemian glass, and sterling silver. Austin Design originated in 1987 on the Island of Cape Hatteras, a small fishing village on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Today, we also have a studio in the foothills of the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. Our company is a group of artisans which create each and every piece by hand. We pride ourselves not only in our original designs but also in the quality and workmanship which goes into every piece. Our inspiration, of course, is our home island ~ into all the jewelry we blend the colors, elements and feel of the ocean.
